Dances With Winnebagos

Living and Working the Mobile RV Life

Its been a whirlwind summer and I went out to the site to see it’s been two months since either Tim or I have blogged on here. Yes, this site seems to be the last item on our list of priorities- sorry!

We finished our circle of the US and returned to our real love- the Pacific Northwest. We’ve been in Gig Harbor, Washington for three weeks now. I love Gig Harbor, the beauty of the bay, the lumbering Mt. Rainer in the Southeast overlooking in the distance. Its just a gorgeous area in the Puget Sound.

If you’re unfamiliar with this little piece of evergreen heaven, the town is situated about six miles past Tacoma, Washington, just over the Tacoma Narrows, a section of water that has a bridge with an interesting history. Many will recognize the video from below that was shot during the 4 months “Galloping Gertie” existed until November, 1940 when it collapsed due to aeroelastic flutter.

The bridge was only open since July, so it was in use for just over 4 months when winds over 40 MPH caused it to collapse and at that point, the residents of the area new better than to use it and only a dog that ran out onto the bridge was the sole casualty of the bridge collapse.

The bridge has since been rebuilt, only the towers being recycled, a second set of towers constructed and a complete redesign that includes full foundational supports that have turned the bridge into “Sturdy Gertie”.

Gig Harbor is the first town west of the bridge and is considered one of the top ten waterfront towns to live in the US. Tim and I really love the location and stayed here just over a year ago, too and couldn’t wait to come back. I love to ride my bike down to the coffee shop to work remote and look over the bay. I love the restaurants, shops and there is even a Heritage distillery tasting room that overlooks the bay. During the summer, there is the farmers market, concerts and other community events that make it a lovely place to be.

I feel like, if I keep telling you how great it is, you’ll want to move here, too, so I’m going to shut up now and keep this little piece of heaven to the rest of us, so just happy to have another blog post out here and talk to you soon!
